Start with the room you actually live in
A speaker has to share its space with a sofa, a television, a dining table and, usually, other people. Before choosing Bang & Olufsen, sketch that space. Mark where you listen, where power sockets sit and which surfaces are genuinely available. A beautifully finished speaker that needs an inconvenient position can become an expensive compromise.

They are not a sound-quality ranking. A portable unit for occasional listening and a fixed home system solve different problems, even when both carry the same name.
Three listening situations, three different briefs
Music while moving around the house: prioritise convenient controls, a practical charging arrangement and the connection you actually use. Check the current product’s size and weight rather than assuming that every portable speaker is comfortable to carry.
Albums from one favourite chair: think about the relationship between the listening position and the speakers. Ask the retailer to demonstrate the intended arrangement, not merely a single attractive unit on a display shelf. Room size alone does not describe the distance, hard surfaces or open doorways that affect the result.
Television and music in the same room: write down the television model and every source you use. Ask which product handles dialogue, how volume is controlled and what happens when you switch between television and music. A reassuring demonstration should include those ordinary changes.
Make the audition answer your questions
Bring a short playlist you know well: a voice, a busy passage and something with sustained low notes. Keep the listening level sensible and comparable when moving between options. Louder can be initially impressive without being the setting you would use at home.
Listen from more than one position if the room is shared. Notice whether a voice remains intelligible at a lower level, whether the controls are easy to reach and whether the furniture arrangement still makes sense. These are observations to make during your appointment; they are not measurements or results claimed by this guide.
Write down the complete system
Ask for a written list covering the main product, stands or wall fittings, connection hardware and any installation work. If you hope to reuse an older B&O component, provide its exact model name. A family resemblance is not a compatibility guarantee. Confirm the specific connection and the functions that will work together.
For a networked setup, discuss the available connection, everyday app use and who in the household needs access. Request the current support documentation for the proposed products. Do not assume that the features of a shop display, an earlier generation or an online video apply to the unit on the quotation.
The finish is part of the decision
Materials and proportions are a major reason to consider B&O. View the finish in ordinary daylight where possible, and judge it alongside your furniture rather than in isolation. Also ask how that exact surface should be cleaned. A fabric cover, an aluminium panel and a timber detail need not share a care method.

Obtain the relevant terms from the seller rather than treating a broad service description as a promise about every order.
When the premium makes sense
B&O deserves a closer look when sound, interior design and a coordinated system matter together. It may be a less comfortable choice if you mainly want the lowest cost for one isolated function, or prefer to change separate components frequently. The sensible shortlist is the one that works with your room and your habits, with the complete cost understood before you commit.
